HelloFresh vs the grocery store, priced

I priced one week of HelloFresh against the same recipes from Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and Aldi. The numbers will surprise you.

I'd been on HelloFresh for two years. The boxes were fine. The food was fine. Cost was fine, until I bothered to compare it to actually shopping for the same recipes. Then it stopped being fine.

This is what one week looked like, priced three ways: HelloFresh, my local Whole Foods, my local Trader Joe's, and Aldi. Same four dinners, same household of two, same week.

The week

  • Monday: Lemon-garlic chicken with roasted potatoes and broccoli
  • Tuesday: Beef and bell-pepper stir fry with jasmine rice
  • Wednesday: Cacio e pepe with a green salad
  • Thursday: Salmon with brown rice and asparagus

Each meal was 4 servings (2 dinners + 2 lunches the next day). HelloFresh's "Family Plan" priced these at $11.99 per serving, plus a $9.99 shipping fee.

HelloFresh, this week

4 meals × 4 servings × $11.99$191.84
Shipping$9.99
Total$201.83

Whole Foods, same recipes

I priced every ingredient against Whole Foods' Instacart listing on a Tuesday afternoon. I assumed I already had pantry staples (olive oil, salt, pepper) on hand — same assumption HelloFresh makes implicitly.

Chicken thighs (2 lb)$10.99
Beef sirloin (1.5 lb)$15.50
Salmon fillet (1.5 lb)$22.49
Spaghetti, pecorino, black pepper$11.20
Produce (potatoes, broccoli, peppers, asparagus, salad mix, lemons)$28.40
Pantry add-ons (jasmine rice, soy sauce, brown rice)$13.60
Subtotal$102.18
Instacart fees + tip$18.00
Total$120.18

Trader Joe's, same recipes

Trader Joe's doesn't deliver, so this assumes a 25-minute trip. I priced ingredients in-store at the Brooklyn Bridge location.

All meat + fish$36.90
All produce$22.40
Pasta + cheese + grains + sauces$18.20
Total (no fees)$77.50

Aldi, same recipes

Aldi was the surprise. Same week, same four dinners:

All meat + fish$28.45
All produce$15.20
Pasta + cheese + grains + sauces$11.80
Total (no fees)$55.45

Side-by-side

HelloFresh (delivered)$201.83
Whole Foods (delivered via Instacart)$120.18
Trader Joe's (in-store)$77.50
Aldi (in-store)$55.45

Even with Instacart fees and a tip, Whole Foods came in 40% cheaper than HelloFresh. Trader Joe's was 62% cheaper. Aldi was 72% cheaper.

The honest catch

Meal kits are selling convenience, and there's a real cost to building the list yourself, looking up the recipes, and remembering what you have at home. That's a 2-3 hour problem for most households.

But it's a 20-minute problem with a planner that builds the list automatically, sorts it by aisle, and ships it to Instacart in one tap. We built Weeknight Win for exactly this. Same recipes, same Instacart delivery, none of the meal-kit markup.

Prices noted: April 2026, NYC metro. Your local store may vary, but the ratio doesn't change much across the country.
