Classic Waffles
Light and crispy on the outside, tender and fluffy on the inside, these classic waffles are a breakfast staple that can be dressed up with toppings or enjoyed simply with maple syrup. Their golden-brown hue and pleasing texture make them irresistible, transforming any morning into a special occasion.
Origin
Waffles have a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages, initially enjoyed as a sweet treat at fairs across Europe. The American version emerged in the 19th century, when waffle irons became common in kitchens, leading to the popular breakfast dish we know today.
Ingredients
- 250 gramsall-purpose flour
- 10 gramsbaking powder
- 30 gramssugar
- 5 gramssalt
- 300 mlmilk
- 2 largeeggs
- 75 gramsunsalted butter
- 5 mlvanilla extract
Instructions
- 01
Step 1: In a large bowl, whisk together 250g all-purpose flour, 10g baking powder, 30g sugar, and 5g salt until well combined; this ensures even distribution of the leavening agent for a consistent rise.
- 02
Step 2: In a separate bowl, beat 2 large eggs and then add 300ml milk, 75g melted unsalted butter, and 5ml vanilla extract; the eggs provide structure while the milk and butter add moisture and richness.
- 03
Step 3: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined; avoid overmixing to keep the waffles tender.
- 04
Step 4: Preheat your waffle iron according to the manufacturer's instructions. Once ready, ladle an appropriate amount of batter (about 1 cup) onto the center and close the lid; cook until golden brown, which usually takes 4-5 minutes.
- 05
Step 5: Remove the waffles carefully and serve immediately while hot, or keep warm in a low oven (around 90°C/200°F) while you cook the remaining batter.
Chef's notes
- Avoid overmixing the batter; lumps are fine and lead to fluffier waffles.
- For a gluten-free option, substitute all-purpose flour with a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend, but the texture may vary slightly.
