Ingredients

  • 1 cuptoor dal (split pigeon peas)
  • 1 mediumonion
  • 1 mediumtomato
  • 1 inch pieceginger
  • 2 clovesgarlic
  • 1 teaspooncumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoonturmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoonred chili powder
  • 2 tablespoonsoil or ghee
  • to tastesalt

Instructions

    Rinse dal and cook in a pressure cooker with 3 cups of water until soft (20 minutes).

    In a pan, heat oil or ghee, and add cumin seeds.

    Sauté chopped onions until golden, then add ginger and garlic.

    Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric, and red chili powder, cook until tomatoes soften.

    Mix this tempering into the cooked dal, add salt, and simmer for 5 minutes.
